Hi Chris. If it says Sagem on the ecu then panic, they do go faulty, it is supposed to be due to faulty coils causing them to fail. The dealers quote about 850.00 to fit a new ecu , idle speed stepper motor and coil pack. In my view they should be recalled and replaced under warranty as they are basically crap. You may find that B.B.A can repair them if your lucky. P.S if you look back through the old posts, you may find more info on these things.

thanks guys for info, had another 306 in last week it needed new ecu new coil pack and stepper.the original 306 never retured to workshop so either the problem disappeard or went some where else.these do seem to sufer from spike problems resulting from crappy sagem coils. they are now using another make.if problems exsist with idle faults it is a good idea to have fault codes read, if idle control valve circuit fault recorded and does not clear then im affraid its too late.reach for your credit card.

hi there all finnally got rid of the last 306, blew up two ecu,s( thanks to the guys at bba for there help repairing these units).first unit blown when vehicle arrived at workshop. another garaged had changed the stepper.
got new unit from peugeots (431).plug it in and it blew on third start.fitted new coil pack, stepper.got original repaired by bba.fitted it ,it blew on start up for road test.spoke to peugeot workshop top tech, told to fit condenser to spare terminal on coil.bba repaired the new ecu as original now blown beyond repair.can now starting and running fine after a number of starts and road tests. so if you have any similar problems fit the condenser to new coils.(they fit loads of these at main dealers).thanks for every one help.

Hi all.
I have a 1999, 1.4 Liter peugeot 306 NX which I insist on fixing without being ripped off for new parts. The problem is a known one; a lovely little car that a shortwhile after buying started cutting off at low revs when approaching or stopping at junctions, traffic lights etc. The problem is more severe when the airconditioner is running.
The car has beem multiple times to Peugeot’s dealer garage, where I bought the car (a used one), and they couldn’t fix. They replaced the ignition coil, the idle fuel injector (I don’t know what it’s called in english) and even tried to replace the ECU (the computer. Not sure about the exact term). I refused to pay what amounts to about 2000 $US for a new ECU so they installed a repaired replacement (The original was Sagem, the replacement Magneti Marelli, if I remember correctly). That seemed to fix the problem until winter cold days arrived. The car couldn’t be started whatever you did. Out of desperession I reinstalled the old Sagem which I tossed at a corner and clear forgot about. The car started instantly but I had all the old troubles coming back.
I sent the Sagem to repair few times already. The cutoff problem improved but the car became jerky at low revs, idle revs are too high (about 1200) and very often revs drop down to idle too slowly.
The guy who fixed the computer says he can only improve the situation, not to fix it, and once in a while I’ll have to do this repair again, which I already did 3 times. The guy keep it all secret and wouldn’t tell what he did in these semi-repairs.
My question after this long story (please forgive) is: Is there any way to fix the problem once and for all? Is there no combination of parts, probably by another manufacturer, that will fix this car?
Honestly, it’s a matter of principle now. The indiferrence of Peugeot to this problem, which showed on many vehicles, drives me nuts. I want to fix the car. period.
